I solved issue - had the same. Just run:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall nodejs npm nodejs-legacy

Please use node version manager - nvm
https://github.com/creationix/nvm
this way you can easily switch to the version your projects needs at any moment (which is not supported by ubuntu package)
