I have an old PC I wanted to turn into a home server with the following specs:

  • Intel Pentium 4 2.8Ghz

  • 1.5GB RAM

  • p4x266e-8235 motherboard

I installed Ubuntu Server 16.04 32-bit onto the machine. However I have no internet. I ofcourse plugged an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port.

Running ifconfig -a only gives me the local loopback. No Ethernet...

When I run lshw -C network I get nothing back.

When I run lspci -nnk I get the following: https://imgur.com/a/XdIFN4d No trace of an ethernet interface or controller.

I also looked in the BIOS settings but I couldn't find a way to disable or enable LAN.

What can I do? Should I just buy an USB to Ethernet adapter? Will this work?

Thanks

  • Welcome to Ask Ubuntu. Please don't provide pictures of text, I realize your issue is no internet, but copy the file to a thumb drive & walk it to a working machine. lshw requires elevated (root) privileges for full output so did you use sudo? Which server installer did you use? (they don't all support everything) Did it work when tested 'live' (if you used a live server installer) or check to see what hardware you have using a desktop edition in 'live' (try) mode. If a 'live' works with internet you can then take note of your hardware & it's then easier for your preferred installer
