So, this all started out with not being able to run MATLAB on my Ubuntu machine. Online threads (https://www.reddit.com/r/matlab/comments/9nms3u/matlab_100_cpu_hang_linux_ryzen_lenovo_thinkpad/) suggested to run an older kernel. However, when I press the down key in Grub2, my pc just freezes.

So to fix that I tried to run boot repair, which prompted me to execute:

$ sudo apt-get install -y grub-efi-amd64-signed os-prober shim-signed linux-headers-generic linux-signed-generic

However, the terminal gets stuck at:

Anyone who can suggest a way forward?
