Trying to get an older version of Ubuntu (16.04-based) running on newer hardware by upgrading the kernel--specfically at this moment, trying to get the wifi controller recognized.

With stock 16.04 install, running modinfo iwlwifi shows the expected list of available iwlwifi- firmware, but lshw -C network shows the network device as UNCLAIMED (Intel Wireless-AC 9560 {8086:a370}). dsmeg | grep iwlwifi outputs nothing.

After upgrading the kernel from 4.4.x to a custom compile of kernel 4.16.18 (4.16.18--1.blah-), modinfo iwlwifi still shows expected driver file name (iwlwifi.ko) location and other info, but now does not show any of the installed firmware options. lshw -C network still shows the network device as UNCLAIMED. dsmeg | grep iwlwifi still outputs nothing.

(1) Why would modinfo iwlwifi not be showing the firmware options after the kernel upgrade (path issue of some sort?)?

(2) I suspect I need to recompile the driver per this prior answer to a similar question.. Intel wireless 8260 - unclaimed network. However, I don't know exactly what backport to use as the foundation. What file should I use as a starting point?

Hardware:
Intel® Core™ i3-8100 Processor (3.6 GHz, 6 MB Cache, 2400 MHz, 4 core, 65W) + Intel® UHD Graphics 630
