I need help installing Ubuntu 18.10. Issue summary: Live USB boots and interaction is as it should be. After installing to harddisk, system boots but freezes afer log-in page submitted. See notes below for details.

Many thanks.

Notes:

  1. Checked integrity of downloaded ISO files

  2. Reformated USB drives with GParted to fat32

3.a Used UnetBootin to install ISO onto USB drive

3.b Used "Startup disk creater" on Lubuntu 18.10 system as an alternative to Unetbootin

  1. Booted to USB on target machine

  2. No wireless mouse/KB or second monitor were attached during installation

Observations:

  1. Ubuntu based distros booted to USB live recognising wireless and dual monitor setup (when second monitor was attached)

  2. After installation of distro to hard-disk (SSD) system booted to login page

  3. After entering login details - screen cleared and mouse pointer remained on screen

  4. Unable to drop into console with Ctr+Alt+{F1 to F4) - sometimes a black screen would appear but no interaction was possible so unable to log in to change config details

  5. Using shutdown/reboot from Live USB resulted in system freeze (inconsistent)

  6. Attempted normal, minimal and network enabled installation of distros where available- no change in sysmptoms
