Splash is an American competition-based reality show with celebrity diving competitions which broadcast on ABC from March 19 to May 7, 2013. It was based on the Dutch reality franchise Celebrity Splash! created by Eyeworks for the series Stars Jumping on Saturday (Dutch: Sterren Springen Op Zaterdag) that premiered in 2012.[2] The show was hosted by actor Joey Lawrence and sportscaster Charissa Thompson with former Olympic divers Steve Foley from Australia and David Boudia from the U.S. as judges. Greg Louganis, also a former U.S. Olympic diver, was the diving instructor and mentor to the celebrities.[3]

Production history

The series was first publicized on October 5, 2012, when ABC announced it had ordered a celebrity diving reality competition show straight to series from Eyeworks. Originally titled Celebrity Diving, the show would use the format created for Dutch reality franchise Celebrity Splash! in which celebrities perform regulation springboard and platform dives with different challenges increasing in difficulty each week after training with professional diving instructors between episodes.[4]

In January 2013, the show was renamed Splash and eight of ten celebrity cast members were announced; the final two cast members were named the following month.[5][6] In March 2013, actor Joey Lawrence and sportscaster Charissa Thompson were announced as hosts.[7]

The shows were filmed in Riverside, California at the Aquatics Complex on the Riverside City College campus.[1]

A humorous, personalized walkout song was composed for each celebrity by supervising producer and lyricist Rick Austin with music by Jingle Punks. The show's producers decided to write original pieces to avoid the cost of obtaining rights to hit songs. Austin said the idea was create songs that were "intentionally bad", but "fun".[8]
