The 2016–17 Académica do Porto Novo season were in the island and top division of Cape Verdean football. The season for the club was as not as successful as the previous four seasons, a part of it were defeating the region's weakest clubs, since the association has only a single division. The club won their 11th title[1] and became the next club to win seventh consecutive titles of each island leagues, others are CS Mindelense of nearby São Vicente several times between the foundation up to 1994, Botafogo of Fogo in 1981 and Brava's Nô Pintcha in 1996. The title total has became to be one of the most number of clubs having the most regional titles.[2]


Académica Porto Novo's regional championship titles covers half of the 21 regional titles won with the exception of some seasons in the late 1990s.

Santo Antão South Zone Island League


The 2016-17 season was their seventh consecutive season that finished first place. It was a slightly more successful than the previous season and did not had a single loss. Their first match was a 0-7 win over Sporting. Académica made the season's only draw with Lajedos. Académica underwent a 10 match winning streak, their greatest result were 8 goals, first to Inter (8-0), then Sporting (9-2) and last another challenge with Inter as an alternate match (1-8). The March 18 match was the only one that was awarded 0-3 as Santo André did not show up due to financial concerns and not to concede a goal more than Sporting Porto Novo's at the final round. Later that round, Sporting had 38 goals conceded and the club conceded 39, a week later Sporting Porto Novo conceded the most goals in the region. Académica had a 12 match unbeaten streak at the time, its record still continues on home matches.


Académica Porto Novo finished with 11 wins and a draw.


A club from Brava named Sporting Brava had a 49 match unbeaten streak at the regions, four less than Académica Porto Novo's, midseason, their success was shattered and that would be second behind Académica's/


Uncommon in other leagues in other countries, some of the matches of different portions were mixed up and in different round which were not in order.

Santo Antão South Zone Cup


Académica Porto Novo defeated Sanjoanense in the regional cup final and claimed their 12th cup title and is the most of any of the regional Capeverdean cup titles.

Unlike earlier seasons with their outstanding achievements even in cup competitions, the club lost one of a few matches there and was out of the competition and their continued records without a loss at the regional competitions was shattered.

Nonetheless in the 2016 edition, the club defeated Lajedos who was second place cup winner as the club were also cup winners and claimed their 6th Super Cup title.

Académica participated in the first ever Santo Antão single Super Cup, in the finals, the club defeated Marítimo in the Super Cup final.



Cape Verdean Football Championships


The 2017 National Championships season was the first reformatted into three groups. The club was placed in Group B and played their first match of the season at home with Sal's Académico do Aeroporto which ended in a goal draw and was second place. Académica Porto Novo lost to Mindelense away in the neighboring island of São Vicente with the result 2-1. A two-goal draw was made with Paulense from the north of the island and regained second place. The club made their only win to date on June 3 defeating Académica do Aeroporto in their first double challenge at the nationals with the score 1-3, one of two highest in the nationals. They had saved themselves from preventing their chance for entry into the knockout stage even in the best second placed club of each group after Mindelense made a draw. Académica Porto Novo got their second straight win defeating almighty Mindelense and their third straight in their derby with Paulense and finished second in Group B with 11 points and first in the best second place of each group with 11 points and 12 goals (also the nation's highest at the regular season), two more than Maio's Onze Unidos which got their ticket into the playoff stage. In goal totals of the regular season, it became a record for the club beating their 2011 regular season total which was first.

Knockout stage


Académica do Porto Novo participated in the knockout stage against Sporting Praia, the first leg was played on June 24 at home which ended in a goal draw, the second leg was on July 1 at Várzea and was a 0-1 loss to Sporting and the club was out from participation in the finals.
