As far as I understand, there are no clipper card vending machines at OAK. But there is one at Coliseum Station. If I plan to buy a clipper card anyway, should I do that at Coliseum Station? Or should I buy a regular ticket from OAK to my destination in downtown San Francisco and buy a clipper card afterwards?

I assume you're talking about taking BART from OAK to San Francisco, in which case, you should wait until you're in San Francisco to get the Clipper card.

There's no particular reason I can think of to stop at the Coliseum just for a Clipper card. Paper tickets on BART have a per trip surcharge, which you're already paying to take BART away from the airport. There are no monetary savings in paying for a paper ticket for OAK-Coliseum and using Clipper for Coliseum-Powell (for example) compared to just buying a paper ticket from OAK-Powell.

          • I'm not very familiar with the Coliseum station, but it's possible the Clipper machine is outside the fare gates, or at least an annoying schlep from the platform for someone carrying luggage. Regardless, depending on the timing of the connection, you may not want to bother.

If your trip is at least 10 days away, then order a clipper card online or by phone and get it by postal mail. It's also the cheapest way to get a card because it's free if you opt-in for autoloading money on it (you can always opt-out after you receive it). Otherwise, a card is $3.
