Update -
I determined what the root cause of the issue or at least found a work around.

The issue is with Ubuntu 18.04 or at least with comes on it. I tried to change from gdm3 to lightdm but that didn't help. Finally I wiped everything out again and this time I installed 16.04. I was able to get a working nvidia driver. The only issue that I ran through is that the disk encryption screen is not shown. I have to blindly enter the password. Once I pass it I can see the login screen and login without issues. I really hope that this issue becomes resolved with future ubunut versions. So for now the solution is to downgrade to 16.04. If anyone has any solution for the encryption screen, please share it. Thank you!

I followed this guide while installing the driver on 16.04 ubuntu. The only thing I did different was instead of disabling lightdm, I installed the run file from ubuntu recovery.

I have been struggling with the black-screen issue for a number of days. It happens after I install Nvidia driver from Ubuntu software or via terminal.

This worked once and I can no longer get it to work.

I have done clean installs several times.

I tried nvidia418 and nvidia390 and others.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 18.04, clean installation.
I have installed Mate Desktop Environment.
I installed lightdm and switched to use it.
And I added the nomodeset which I know is needed.

I know the issue is not with MATE since I tried to install nvidia and ran into the balacksreen issue without ever installing MATE.

I just installed nvidia from Ubuntu Software menu and haven't restarted yet, because I fear I will get the blackscreen one more time.

The problem seems to be only on Ubuntu.
This is an Alienware laptop 17.3 A4
I have four harddrives on it.

• One is used only for Windows 10


• One is for files using UDF


• One is for Linux Parrot OS


• One is for Ubuntu 18.04.2

Nvidia works without issues on Windows 10 and Parrot OS. I need to get nvidia working on ubuntu for development and machine learning.

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

Maybe above message is because I haven't restarted yet.
