I had some trouble with my ubuntu installation lately and essentially what I've got is a backup clones of my root and home partitions. I managed to get everything working if I install ubuntu and format a new root partition to install to and then just mount the home partition without formatting it. The thing is, then all my packages and everything in root is gone. Is there a way to sort of "restore" this data from the backup or at least an easier way to install the packages that were installed on my old root partition?
I tried to just copy and paste over the root partition with gparted after installing using a livecd but then I can't boot anymore. Is there just a specific directory I can leave alone but copy over everything else?
